I finally broke down and bought one. It sat around truck in my after playing with it for a while. Then one day, working at a new restaurant, I had to make a hole for the beverage line that the architect forgot to spec. Underneath the back-bar, way up in the corner, a 5" hole was needed. The hole didn't need to be pretty as it would be completely unseen. Through two layers of 3/4" plywood, a 1" space between them, and a layer of 5/8" sheet rock. On the other side of the sheet rock was a 2 x 6 turned flat against the sheet rock. I got my huge Milwaukee with a 5" hole saw out and was on my way when I remembered the Multimaster in the truck. I gladly took the Milwaukee back (not much fun drilling 5" holes with that thing - easy to break a wrist). The electrician who was near laughed when I got the MM out and put a 1" blade on. The blade is only about 2" long but I cut the plywood first, then the sheet rock, and then the 2 x 6. It took almost 10 minutes, much of which was me trying to fit into the space and set up the light to see what I was cutting. It is also great when doing flooring (plunge cutting, cutting the bottom of jambs and trim out of the way, etc.) I am now sold on it and have used it many times cutting things that would have been a real challenge without it. BTW, the electrician now has one too.
And yes, they are too expensive but worth every penny. My only gripe is that the blades are way expensive too. I hope that someone will make blades that will fit it soon. I bought this tool based on recommendations from sailboat owners who have done detail projects and large scale paint removal using this tool and were thrilled with the results. My project was the removal of 900 square feet of old linoleum tile that was water damaged in my father's basement. This tool made the project a breeze! My brother had tried removing the tile with a hoe and a roofing tool all to no avail. The Fein easily cut the asphalt glue under the tiles and peeled them up -- entire project done in 8 hours! Then, I had to repair a 1 1/2" PVC pipe in a basement rafter. Impossible with regular tools, but the Fein cut the pipe in seconds -- and the cut was reasonably square allowing an immediate fix to the plumbing. Then I took the sanding pads supplied with the kit and re-finished several pieces of oddly shaped outdoor wood. All much faster and with much cleaner results than by hand and in places that palm sanders would never have reached.

Tools are extremely easy to change. Flip the lever on the back up, remove the "screw", place the new tool on the shaft, replace the "screw", and flip the lever back down. Ready to do the next job! Speed adjustment goes from virtually moving to really fast (used to cut the tiles) and is easy to do on the fly while working. I am now using it on a job at my home and cutting sheet rock with half the mess -- the vacuum attachment works! -- and twice as fast as with my hand saw. (I still use the hand saw if I suspect wires or pipes behind the sheet rock.) I love this tool because it is extremely fast to set up, easy to use, and does the job well. And you can't beat the warranty.

The Fein MultiMaster is a fine product and performs up to expectations BUT the attachments that come with it are the pits. I recently pulled up all the flooring in my house to put down ceramic and hardwood. So immediately I went to the 'door jam' trimmer blade. What a incredible timesaver it was. Within 5 minutes I had the jams on 5 doors trimmed to fit the new height of my flooring. Sounds like a winner huh? Now the downside. After the first door I lost 3 or 4 teeth. After the second door I lost 3 or 4 more teeth. You can see where this is going. By then end of door 5 the blade was no longer usable. I only had 6 or 7 teeth left. On top of it all this blade didn't even come with the $399 product. I had to spend another (I think $39) for it.

So now that my jams were trimmed I went on to tackle the stone fireplace because I had to slide the hardwood underneath the stone. So I pull out the 'carbide' cutter to cut away the mortar below the stones. That blade lasted about 1-foot of the 5-foot mantle. After that it wouldn't cut at all. So back to my well trusted and proven (and cheap) cold chisel which finished the job (but it certainly took longer).

On to another attachment, the triangular corner sander. I used it to sand the inside corners on a step stool I made. I was trying to remove the 'old' stain. I went through 5 sanding pads on 4 corners. The attachment got so hot that when I removed the pads the Velcro part of the attachment pulled off at one of the corners and now the very expensive attachment has a corner that won't stay. I've tried to glue it back down but it won't hold.

I have tried to rationalize away the cost of the accessories. I've told myself - "hey it only took 5 minutes to trim those jams, you would have taken 1/2 hour to do it with a flush cut hand saw. That is a savings of 25 minutes." But at $39 a pop for the blades even my poor mental math doesn't add up.

These guys have a decent tool, but go to buy a replacement blade after you've chewed up the piece of junk you got with the unit and you're going to be shocked. You're going to pay $28.00 or so for a piece of pressed tin that won't last you a week. They should caution "dont spindle fold or mutilate" on their packaging. Their blades are junk that you'll either pay their outrageous price for, or you'll have to abandon the tool. My advice would be to buy a tool that has blades available from different suppliers. If you want to spend the $400 for this tool, go ahead and buy it. It will do everything as advertised. But, if you want to spend $350 less and have something that will do all the same type of cutting, get the MultiTool by Chicago Tools. I got mine at Harbor Freight Tools and it is great! Chicago has nearly all the same blades for sawing, scraping, grout cutting, diamond blades, etc. The only real difference is how you change blades. The Chicago uses an allen wrench. Big deal! I agree with Mantra, this is a great tool for small things that would otherwise be time consuming, difficult, or not possible at all. It's not meant to be the tool you use for everything. I purchased the multimaster top after I had watched the DVD a few times. After contracting a window replacement job, I thought this tool would be a good choice for cutting out the old aluminum frames. I purchased the top, since I knew I'd be in enough trouble, you might as well buy the top of the line if you're gonna "pay" for it "later."

Anyhow, the new windows arrived and I began to use this tool to cut around the aluminum frame so that the other windows would slide snugly into the opening.

Was I in for a surprise. I worried it wouldn't work well, but this tool literally cut these windows out like a can opener. Fast. I wish I had taken a video so you could see. This tool saved me much time on this particular job, and made the job VERY easy to accomplish. All windows were removed with ease. The job took only one days labor, with only one person (myself) doing it.

I have used this tool on many applications since. I never thought this tool would be so handy. I set 14 doors and jamb openings, and had many shims to cut. Forget the utility knife method. I got the multimaster out and cut though the multi-layers of cedar shims in seconds. And the cuts were flush and true so there were no parts of the shims sticking out to make casing the jambs a problem at all.

I have also used this to cut inside corner moldings on remodels at the height of the new baseboard. I just marked the inside corner molding and cut through with the multi. Piece of cake. The other methods would have been to remove the trim, cut it off and renail, or take a chisel and/or utility knife to it, which is time consuming.

I have used this tool in many other applications and too much detail to explain on here. But if you buy this tool, you will find yourself using it more often than you had thought you would.

Cons:

This tool does get quite warm. Wear gloves.

It is probably louder than what you would guess.

The blades are expensive. (But as a contractor I include the blade cost in my job bid) which isn't a ton of money, but it is a product that will be used to accomplish a job, so my customers pay for that in a way.

The price is not a con. It is well worth it. I actually got the TOP for 360.00 at a tool shop where I live. This was their last one, and not the first time I enquired with them about it. EVERYONE in that shop has one and they all rave about it. Several customers came in while I was purchasing it asking what I did for a living and telling me how I would love this tool. They were correct.

If you remodel/build buy this tool. You will be glad you did.

I saw this tool advertised for years and never gave a second thought to purchase one. It appeared to me to be a tool used for one or two different jobs and not good at doing any very well.
In the past I used a router to trim some window extensions (not good results), and a utility knife to cut carpet. I would remove a door to trim the bottom and I would use a sawsall to cut flooring up to the wall and a roto-duster to cut outlet holes and remove grout by hand. But now I use the Fein MultiMaster for all of this and more. It does everything the promotions claim. That's a first for me! I don't understand some of the disappointments aimed at this tool. I came to believe that $15 for an E-cut blade is a reasonable price.
If a person has never had to remove grout by hand the price of the cutter may seem high but at least for me, it's a very reasonable price and could be considered low. I don't find the blades dull quickly at all. I've not used the sanding pad so I can't comment.
After I purchased the Fein MultiMaster Top Kit I happened upon an infomercial on tv. It's a good thing I bought it before seeing that because that infomercial comes across to me a bit cheesy. Somewhat related to the Ronco slicer-dicer. But it really isn't, it's a solid tool that should last a life time.
If you do any remodeling or some of the projects that I've mentioned you won't be sorry for this purchase and will wonder how you've gotten along without it.

This is a great tool - as long as it is used as intended and not over extend the capabilitis of the tool.
I own a construction company. My crews have access an inventory of hundreds of tools - initial cost of the tools generally is not a consideration due to high labor cost. Also cheaper tool have a way of breaking down before the entire job is completed. However, I do insist my crews to come up with the most cost effective way to perform the task at hand. Example - We could clean the floor very well with only a tooth brush but we can do a much more cost effective job (faster) when we use both a floor mop for the large areas and a tooth brush for the tight areas.
Most complaints of this tool appears to involve usage of this tool in exclusion of all others. over usage of a new toy. This tool is a fantastic pinch hitter excel for those LITTLE impossible cuts but not a volume work producer. Great as a suppliment tool on large jobs.
As to sanding window moldings prior to painting, small areas are ok, larger areas will just kill the sand paper and pads (cleaning floor with the tooth brush again). Should consider a random orbital sander and/or small belt sander. Won't believe how effective a belt sander can work when a little fore thought is put into a project. I have the predecessor to the "multimaster" before it was called "MultiMaster". It's superb, saves lotsa hours, does precise triming and cutting. Great tool, when removing jamb mouldings it cuts right through nails never mars teh wood, cutout wood for larger electrical boxes etc, much more control than a Roto-Zip, and Rotoa-Zip can't reach like the metal/wood blade does and makes less mess when cuting drywall. How do you get work done without one, it's as handy as a Milwaukee Sawzall, but for smaller, more precise cuts. A+, the GERMANS do it again. The Fein Multimaster tool is fantastic. I used this tool to 'hand sand' hard to reach areas of a large hardwood floor refinishing project. I also used a couple of the blade attachments for replacing slats, cutting molding, etc. I could run the tool for hours and it would not get hot. Unfortunately, the two "hook and loop' sanding pad attachments that came with my set did not last very long. These pad attachments AND especially the velcro sandpaper packs are ridiculously expensive. I have even purchased other sandpaper brands and trimmed them to fit the Multimaster. I have pondered getting one of these tools for about 2 years. The high price of admission always stopped me. I finally caved in when I decided to refinish some kitchen cabinets and wet bar cabinets. The orange store wanted $26k to resurface just the kitchen cabinets. I decided $400 for a Fein Multimaster would easily pay for itself on this job, if I put in the elbow grease.

I considered an inexpensive knock-off from a tool store that specializes in low cost Chinese manufactured tools. They now carry a copy of the original Fein Multimaster. It didn't come with profile sanding attachments, and I didn't know if the original Fein profile kit would fit this unit. What swayed me to the real McCoy was the profile sanding kit. My raised panel doors have rail and stile profiles that are quarter round; they are a real pain to sand by hand. The raised panel is a cove profile. The Fein profile sander kit included profiles for both of these shapes. The sanding profile kit is excellent, far better than the Porter Cable profile sander (which I tried and returned to the store due to poor performance). The Fein profile sanding kit firmly locks the sandpaper in place using firm spring pressure. The PC unit used pressure sensitive adhesive backed sandpaper, which fell off the profile as soon as it could detect the slightest hint of sawdust. I am a bit concerned though, about where to find the replacement sandpaper for the Fein profile sanding kit.

The Multimaster makes short work of sanding all those detail edges. I estimate I can sand 5X more door profiles using this tool than sanding them by hand in a given amount of time. The profiles stay firmly in place during sanding. The Fein sandpaper has impressed me as being very high quality. It lasts a long time compared to the sandpaper I have purchased from competing manufacturers. I sanded 5 doors and 3 drawers using 3 pieces of profile sand paper.

The dust extraction accessory works well, too. It doesn't exactly fit my shop vacuum, but it works fine. The hose seemed to stay attached fairly well. There was very little dust produced during long sanding periods.

The tool's vibration is not uncomfortable over long sanding periods, and noise is not too bad, either. Do wear ear protection, though. The tool's construction quality is very good. It reeks of good design and good manufacturing materials and processes. The cheap knock off version doesn't come close to the fit, finish, and heft of this tool.

I look forward to using the grout removal tool in the near future. I have used a Grout Grabber, in the past. I really like the Grout Grabber. I think the Fein will leave it in the dust, if it removes grout as well as it sands.

I had been holding off buying this tool for several years. Recently one of my customers in whose house I had installed a fiberglass tub surround had a crack appear in the soap dish of the unit. I saw an installer using one of these and was impressed, so I bought one.
I find it very convenient for some jobs. I used it to cut 6x10" holes in wallboard for mounting speakers in a room's walls, and then discovered some framing wood that was too close to the holes. By mounting an E-cut blade at 90 degrees one side or the other, I was able to cut half way through a 2x4, one inch outside the hole area, to make the needed clearance. Without this tool I'd have had to saw right through the wallboard, weakening it a lot, then patching the cut. Even with this tool, being inexperienced, I did cut into the back of the wallboard in a couple spots, but it was easily patched and not weakened too much.
In another place I cut about 3/8 by 3/8 by 2" out of 2x4 right behind the wallboard. This could have been done with a chisel, but it would have been more time consuming.
One does have to be careful not to burn the work--you can put a lot of power into a small place and easily scorch wood and make a lot of smoke, and presumably fire too...
The tool is very comfortable to use, because it is not fighting to go somewhere, like rotating cutters do.
My only complaint is that the blades cost 2-3x more than I think they should. There are some much less expensive similar tools just coming out now, and perhaps the competition will lower prices, but of course the other tools aren't going to use compatible blades I'm sure. And likely they won't be as sturdy as this/these.
One job that failed: a number of sheetrock screws protruded maybe 1/16" into a closet, just waiting to snag someone. I tried to cut the tips off using the wood/metal E-cut blade, but it damaged the blade (though I was still able to use it for the above mentioned cuts). The carbide tile file was too coarse for the job. I finally used a Dremel with a cutoff wheel instead. Maybe the diamond blade would have worked.

I think the other reviews of this device are pretty much on target. This is an excellent tool and it does what it advertises. But does a tool that basically vibrates fast really need to cost four hundred dollars? Here are my thoughts:

1.) The patent on this tool has expired and there are several multimaster "clones" out there. A short list: Rockwell, Dremel, Harbor Freight Tools, Bosch. Of these, the Bosch is probably the best, and it even takes the Fein blades. However as of this writing you can only buy the uncorded version in the United States. This is not the sort of tool that should be powered by a battery.

2.) All of the attachments work very well. The sanding function is terrific and if you haven't used an oscillator of this type before (for instance if you're used to using a Black & Decker "Mouse" or something similar) you will be pleasantly surprised at this upgrade. The other attachments also work well, but I would not use the E-Blade or any E-Blade to cut metal, unless it is very thin. Don't try to cut hard metals.

3.) I agree that the plastic case inserts are not professional grade. The case itself is acceptable, but I prefer the Bosch cases.

4.) The blades. Buying replacement blades for this tool can be a drag. The Fein blades are of course very good, but at a starting price of $15 and up you're talking about a further outlay of hard earned money. Yes, there are other options, including the Harbor Freight Tools option or making your own blades, but remember these options void your warranty and aren't as good as the Fein blades. BTW, yes you can use round blades with this tool; you don't "need" the star-shaped quick attachment feature that is under the screw, although it obviously helps.

The verdict: if you are a casual user and only plan to do the work this tool requires a few (less than four) times a year, I wouldn't spend the money. Buy a clone tool instead. Of the clones mentioned earlier, I would avoid the Rockwell--the blades don't work with any of the others. Bear in mind that this tool shines best when used for the things shown in the informercial; while you can probably ditch your reciprocating saw after you buy the multimaster, I would still keep around my jigsaw and a few other tools.

In addition, if you are the type of person who has to have the best of the best then I would say that this tool is for you. Sure you can de-grout a bathroom with a dremel or similar tool for about 1/4 the price, but this is surely not the point for somebody like that.

My hubbie got this from Fein web site (FMM 250Q) and got it fast. However, we had missing parts (a cellopane wraped 3 blade combination of accessories) that should come with the kit. Called Fein and they were surprised that those were missing, but sent to us by UPS anyway without charges. Do not have 365/7/24 customer service, but people who picked up the phone are nice and professional.

Packaging is not as good as expected. After we took the tool out, we cannot put it back unless we took out those filmsy plastic packaging inside the tool box provided. They need better packaging design for such a high price tool.

Tool seem to be well made, but accessories are very expansive. For charging this kind of price, Fein should have included all accessories in the product.

For using, I am not strong enough to flip the handle to change the accessories. However, I like using it to cut wood board and pipes. My hubby has used this to cut sidings, trims and he used this to change sidings in the front portion of our house and he likes the tool. We are planning on using the MulitMaster to sand down the window trims for re-painting this coming year. We like using this tool for detail work and projects that are limited in space.

I understand that Dremmel and Rockwell has came out with similar product (even look the same), but at a lower price level, but I am not sure if the quality are as good as this one from Fein.

Overall, we like the tool, but think it is a bit costly, especially when you need to order additional accessories.

I was looking for a corded oscillating tool and looked at the Fein Multitasker and blades, but it is just way too expensive to purchase for my needs. So I bought the Dremel and the Rockwell to compare side by side...

The $100 Dremel is lighter and a bit smaller but the buzz the motor makes compared to the Rockwell motor [a little bit heavier and slightly bigger] which humms smoothly is like comparing a Vespa scooter to a Victory street bike.

Since the basic Rockwell is only $20 more than the Dremel and the extra blades are about the same price, there was no question about going for the quality/durability of a Rockwell.

The only convenience problem that I can foresee is getting replacement blades:
Dremel is carried by big box hardware stores; hobbyists who do crafts on the spur of the moment and do not need to rip open walls, will appreciate the around-the-corner convenience.
Rockwell is carried by speciality woodworking stores or the internet; the Home Proj. kind of guys have to plan ahead before ripping into a wall for remodeling. So ordering parts in advance should be a no brainer.

I also really liked the Rockwell case, it is created with niches and screw-downs to hold lots of blades/attachments in place.

I looked at the Bosch 12v battery operated version, and that would have been a good choice but I do not want to have numerous 18v tool systems and chargers for the various power hand tools that I use. I read that the Bosch delivers 20 min of battery power and I might need more time than that between charges.

All four tools mentioned above have variable speeds pretty much the same: 10,000 - 21,000 opm. The Bosch details that I read boasted of 5,000 - 20,000 opm, but I do not know if I need to go that slow. If I did I would have researched more into the rare Praxon version of oscillating tool, which is reportedly underpowered and equivalent to size and weight of the Dremel.

I've owned the Fein Multimaster for about a month now, and use it in conjunction with the Turbo II vacuum. This is a convenient and aggressive tool. I held off purchasing it for several years because of the price but now I see that I could have used it for many purposes during my home remodel and could have used it more effectively than the sawzall for most, if not all, of the tasks for which I needed it. The sanding capacity alone will save you significant time and sweat. When I think back to all the sanding I did to the window frames while standing on a ladder I feel somewhat foolish. The vacuum attachment works quite well and is excellent when sanding. In conjunction with the HEPA filter, I cannot detect any airborne particles and there is no cleanup. Be careful when selecting which model to purchase. The new 'no-tool' feature is very nice and I'm glad I didn't buy the previous version that required a hex tool. Look carefully at the supplied items for each of the 3 levels available. The 'Top' version provides the best value and not all of them come with the case, which is somewhat of a necessity. I've read complaints about the case but it certainly seems adequate to me and I can shove a great amount of sandpaper and attachments into the 2 compartments and 1 miscellaneous storage area. You definitely want ear protection. I know the promo. videos show everyone happily using the Multimaster and even talking to each other while it is running, but at 85db+ you WILL damage your hearing. The Fein Multimaster handles every job with ease and precision. The bit changing process is very easy and holds the tool very solidly. I tried cutting wood, and 1/8 " aluminum , cutting holes for my car speaker sheet metal, and sanding. It does everything well, and cuts through sheet metal much easier than the rotozip or dremel with metal cutting disk.

When cutting sheet metal I've noticed that it doesn't give off that hot spark unlike most metal cutting tools.

It also sands really well when used properly which saves me a ton of time sanding.

I'm an advid DIY'er and tool nut so this tool has always intrigued me. After watching the info-mercials for about 6 weeks I decided to investigate further. I talked with the service tech at a highly reputable tool store to see if I could find some fault in the ad. What got me was as he was telling me how awesome the tool was and how everything on the TV commercial is true, the guy next to me said he owned 3 and bought a 4th for his brother-in-law! At $400 a piece I was impressed. Next step was to read all the reviews here at Amazon which were also impressive. So I purchased one and after owning it for just over 3 weeks I find myself grabing for it more and more.

It cuts carpet like butter, scrapes adhesives with ease, cuts wood with surgical presision, and sands like a dream. I haven't even scratched the surface of it's possibilities. One word of caution which I learned the hard way, is not to use it for hardend concrete nails as I ruined a blade. If I have another tool that will work better I use it.

I still think it and the accessories are over priced but I don't regret buying it and it is rapidly becoming one of my favorite tools. The Fein MultiMaster does not belong in the home workshop or in the DIYer tool bag. This is a serious tool for contractors. I waited 2 years to buy this tool, always finding better uses for the $400. Another reviewer said that only contractors who can pass on the cost of this tool need this tool, he is right, to a degree. I was called to a home that had failed the CO inspection, 28 electrical boxes were partially covered by wood wainscoting. Short of removing the wainscoting, I shelled out the cash for a Fein. Snapping on the multi-blade and firing up the tool, I immediately smiled. It soon became an extension of my hand, I felt like an artist gliding through the house, neatly trimming all the boxes with no worry about hitting the wires or plastic boxes. The control, the dexterity, the power, the finesse! I never felt this with my trusty old roto-zip, it always seemed like it one slip away from disaster. Not so with the Fein.
That was 6 months ago. Since then, I have spent about another $400 on blades with no regrets. The Fein seems to come out of its cheap, clunky, ill-fitting case at least 2 or 3 times a week. Sure, there are times when another tool could do the job but none will put a smile on your face like the MultiMaster. The quality is amazing, German engineering, and all that. What this tool can do is only limited by your imagination. The more you use it, the more comfortable and confident you become with it. I have used this tool to remove grout from marble floor and ceramic tile walls, plunge cut into a 6x6, trim doors, set strike plates, cut nails & bolts, remove glazing from 100-year-old windows, cut out deteriorating masonry, and so much more.
The replacement blades are expensive but they last. The knock-offs don't hold up as well as the originals and the balance is not as good, but if you have a FNG using the tool, they are a good buy. In the hands of an experienced used, the originals are the only blades that give you the precise control that you become accustomed to.
Yes, I pass along the cost of this tool and the blades to my clients, but I also pass along the labor savings that this tool brings. When I compare the two, my clients come out way ahead. A wise investment for any contractor!

Pros.. The tool is well balanced and well designed with very high quality materials.
Pros.. It's a great specialty tool that will eliminate the very painful hands resulting from scraping and removing grout in the future.

Next attatched bolted (dont own welder) a 3/4" x 1/4" width reducing bar drilled with two 1/4" holes 1/4" from the edge and spaced holes 15/16" apart then ground a slight concave area inbetween the holes.

I bought this tool after I began refinishing some painted woodwork. I got the full kit primarily because it came with the sanding and vacuum attachments. That was a mistake. The sanding attachments are clever, but won't work with paper-backed sandpaper. The paper doesn't hold up. Five small squares of cloth backed sandpaper are included (three different grits), but it's hard to find cloth backed sandpaper later. So I've made little use of the sanding attachments to this point. I also haven't used the vacuum attachment because it's critical to keep the sanding triangle level to the work, else the edges can easily dig into the surface. Adding the vacuum attachment and dragging a stiff hose makes it very difficult to keep the device level.

On the positive side, the sanding action is excellent. This is my first hook-n-loop sander and I'm sold on this type of sandpaper. My only complaint is the very high cost of Fein replacement pads. I'm investigating buying sandpaper in 4.5" rolls and cutting my own pads. I figure I can cut the paper cost by 2/3 that way.

Net net, the tool is excellent but buy it first and then get only the attachments you need after verifying that the attachment works and holds up in your situation.

Edit #1: Just used the metal cutting attachment to cut through a chrome flange around a pipe to make room for a pipe wrench. The multimaster did an excellent job. Clean, fast cut. No damage to anything else, no hassle with hacksaw or trying to "tear" flange off with channel-locks.

I was faced with removing about 12,000 linear feet of improperly installed grout on a limestone tile floor. The grout lines were thin and the task seemed daunting. After researching various techniques, I found the Fein Multimaster and purchased one along with six diamond blades as recommended by the Fein customer support folks, who incidentally are as good as they could be. This is a heavy duty tool and the oscillation approach is very, very effective. It took a bit of time to develop a technique, but once we understood the tool, the job was completed effectively and efficiently. My only complaint is that the dust collection system did not work well and we improvised with a shop vac.

We also used a wood cutting blade and a carbide surfacing blade and were quite pleased with the ease of cutting and the results generally. This is a specialty tool, however, and the infomercials and the dvd that accompany the tool make the described tasks look a lot easier than they are in real life.

However, we saved thousands of dollars in labor over alternative methods, did not damage any of the tile, and the result was better than expectated.

I do not see this as a handyperson tool that will gather dust on a shelf somewhere. It is a specialty tool that can accomplish many tasks very efficiently. It does many tasks that were formerly the province of a sawzall, but if you are cutting nail embedded material or doing demolition, it is the wrong tool. It is a finish tool when working in wood and will greatly facilitate repairs in tile surfaces, especially where you are facing grout problems or have to replace broken tiles. It is essential that the operator wear a first class dust mask and eye protection, although that goes without saying.

Finally, the various blades are expensive, in fact too expensive. They are available on Amazon at discounts, but still, a damaged blade is a $50 problem, and that limits our experimentation with the tool.

Overall, the tool is what it is promoted to be. It is very well made. The case is well designed and can hold all of the blades and attachments that one might like. I recommend it more to professionals than homeowners as it does require good mechanical skills to operate effectively.

Well built tool. The good. Works great for removing old paint in tight spots. Used the blade attachment to remove caulk right next to brick in minutes. It would have taken hours.
The not so good. The pin that holds the attachments in wouldn't go in easily after being closed without the pin in it and the lever that holds it in will smack you good if you get in it's way.

The Multimaster works by moving the blade (or the sanding foot) in a random orbital motion. So unlike a rotary tool, the blade doesn't pull you through the material. Example: we wanted to move the old vinyl floor in a kitchen and install tile. The vinyl was glued to luan plywood, and both layers ran under the counters and the dishwasher. With one of the Multimaster's saw blades, it was relatively simple to make a clean, straight verical cut in line with the face of the cabinets, back under the toekick. That let me pull up the vinyl and luan from the open floor area and leave it in place under the cabinets. I don't know how I would have been able to do that with any other tool except perhaps a Bosch RotoZip.

It's expensive and the new (250 TOP) version comes in a cheesy plastic case, although to be fair, the metal case that the old (Model 625) version came in was stamped from very thin sheet metal. (If you buy something other than "Top" complete kit, the tool comes in a cardboard box.) But the case is the only light-duty item in the package.

Even if the packaging is cheap, the tool and the accessories are definitely well made and the attachments that are available make it very versatile. This tool reminds me a little of the Rotozip. It works extremely well for the job it was designed for, Multimaster=Flush-cutting, Rotozip=cutting drywall, but isn't as good for the other purposes they are advertised for.

I have used this for a few weeks now and have used the flush-cutting and sanding attachments quite a bit already. It has come in extremely handy for those jobs that it is about the only tool that would work, and average at the other jobs like sanding and scraping.

I would give the tool 4 or 5 stars but the blades are way overpriced and don't last real long. You can buy generic blades that are much cheaper and in some cases better quality, but Fein is trying to stop people from making these blades.

This is an expensive tool with expensive accessories, but in my opinion well worth it. I am an auto mechanic by trade and a homeowner that loves and appreciates quality time saving tools. Since my purchase 2 months ago I have used this tool to pattern cut and install a bath surround, cut and install plastic molding(using a simple adjustable square),trimmed out paneling while on the wall, removed a glued vinyl bathroom floor (with ease), plunge cut and removed damaged soffit material( with such precision that the removed wood could be used as a pattern for the new replacement wood)and scrape old paint off my house corners and soffits. I am very impressed with the tool quality and ease of changing attachments. The profile sanding attachment works good. The storage box could be of better quality but it serves it's purpose. If I were to purchase this again I would probably buy a bare bones kit and choose my accessories seperately. I LOVE this tool. I just upgraded from the previous model (MSXE 636-2 variable speed). I won't go into why this tool is so great because everyone else has already done that. Instead I'm going to compare this tool to its predecessor.

PROS:
This is now a perfect tool. Fein has elegantly fixed the minor gripes I had with the previous generation of the tool. My gripes were 1. Blades slipping and 2. Slow blade-changes using the awkward hex-key that always felt like it was about to cam-out and ruin the lock nut. Both issues have been neatly resolved by the new design. The new star shank on the blades completely eliminates any possibility of slippage, and changing blade, or repositioning it to get into a tight spot no longer requires a trip back to the tool box to get the hex wrench. I LOVE this feature. FEIN ALSO ADDED threaded holes on the body of the tool which function as hard-mount points. This allows you to attach small accessories such as a fence, a depth gauge, a rail guide etc. You can also use the hard-mount points to bench-mount the tool (so you can bring small or delectate work to the tool). This opens up a lot of flexibility on an already very flexible tool. I also like the more ergonomic shape and rubber grip on the new design.

CONS:
None to speak of. The new machine is a tiny bit louder than the old one, perhaps due to the more powerful motor, although it's louder even on the lowest speed setting. To be honest I'm just trying to find SOMETHING to say on the con side. It's really a perfect tool.

OTHER COMPARISONS:
At first I thought I had a slight preference for the larger speed control dial on the old tool, but again he NEW design is ultimately better because the smaller dial (on the tapered rear-end) allows for a more compact dust collection system and a slimmer profile overall. I do actually prefer some of the aspects of my old unit's metal case & divider system. The new case can actually hold more stuff but it doesn't organize the contents as well as the old case did. You can still buy the OLD case, but I'm sure I can easily make the new case as functional as the old case by adding some little dividers etc. The new blow molded tray is more durable, and there's more space allocated for the cord (which is welcome). If FEIN had put a divider system in the new case, it would have been a perfect redesign in my opinion. Perhaps Fein is trying to keep these GERMAN MADE tools made in Germany by cutting costs (instead of going to CHINA like many others have done). If the cheaper, simpler, divider-less case is part of that profitability strategy, I forgive them. I'm handy and so are you (that's why you're reading this review), so I'm going to quit complaining, and get busy customizing the case with dividers to suit my personal needs.

BLADE COST:
As you may know, the blades for this device are somewhat expensive but Fein is now group-packing blades for meaningfully lower cost than before. Basically 3 packs for the price of 2, and 10 packs for the price of 6. This helps. So now I can keep ONE blade of SEVERAL types and yet affordably buy SEVERAL blades of the ONE type I 'consume' regularly. I've recently also seen aftermarket blades on eBay which are cheaper than the FEIN blades, but I've never actually tried them. For all of the trash-talk, I'm always impressed with the longevity of the wood/metal E cut blades.

A FAVORITE TOOL:
This is definitely one of my favorite tools, and I HIGHLY recommend it. Everyone who watches me use mine buys one for themselves. I could write several pages describing all of the things I use it for.

If you own an older model, an upgrade is worthwhile if you use the tool with ANY regularity. The upgrade cost me a mere $100 because I sold my old one (with blades & accessories) on eBay.

If you upgrade not only will you be doing yourself a favor, but you will be making your previous model available to someone else who can't quite afford a new one, or who hasn't yet made the plunge.

I had 15 Pella wooden window frames, circa 1969, in need of repainting. Three years ago they were 'professionally' repainted. This consisted of slapping new paint over the cracked old paint and sending me a $2000.00 bill. The concept of sanding and prepping the frames was apparently overlooked by the 'professionals'.

Last year, in preparation for a graduation party, my bride strongly suggested that we needed to improve the appearance of the windows. Replacement windows were not in the budget, and I didn't want another 'professional' job visited on my wallet. The wood was still in good shape but the paint needed to be taken down in many areas of the frames. Lots and lots of sanding needed to be done.

After prepping one window frame by hand I knew I needed a better and faster approach. I saw the Fein on Amazon.com and went for it.

I have been very happy with my purchase. It has made a large nasty job much quicker. The detailed sanding accessories made short work of all the mutton bars on the windows.

A trick that helps prolong the sanding paper life is use of a sander cleaner stick, like the kind you use to unload the sand paper on a belt sander. It looks like a large art gum eraser stuck to a paint stirrer.

Heat from too much pressure will ruin the hook and loop corners of the sanding pad. I had to buy replacements.

It is a beautiful tool, but like other fine German products, the replacement parts are not cheap. Someone has to help pay for all those short work weeks, extended vacations, and retirement benefits the europeans dearly love. Think of it as the BMW in your tool box.

First off, I'm not a professional handyman but am pretty good with tools and making/fixing things around the house.
I got the tool while I was installing a wood floor in a bedroom... it was extremely useful to under-cut the door trim and I had a wood planked wall that needed undercutting as well... the door trim could have been cut by hand with a flush cut hand saw but the wall under-cut would have been a nightmare without a tool like the multimaster... made quick work of it... even cut right through some hidden nails with very little effort (using the "E-blade").

tool feels "heavy duty" and built to last, the front black part is all metal... orange part is a good quality feeling plastic... power cord is extra long and is a good quality rubber. blade changing is easy as pie with the flip-up lever system.

the case it comes in is OK... it's plastic and like others have said, it doesn't open 180 degrees... only 90 degrees, so maybe it could come down on your hands while rummaging around in the storage boxes for the blades... not a huge deal but would have been nicer if it opened a full 180 degrees...
also note that the blades can get hot so trying to change them immediately after use risks some fingertip burns - but I guess that would be true of pretty much all saws and their blades...

overall, I feel it's a good, solid tool even though a bit pricey... like others have said here, I'd be likely to use it a lot more if the replacement blades weren't so expensive - but they also seem to be of very good quality metal and I suspect each will last a good amount of time before needing replacement...

We'll see as I still have a lot of projects to complete in my 100+ year old house! ;o)

Was a little taken back buy the price, and the cost of the accessories. But nothing can match what you can do with this tool. I'm remoduling a older home, and have used this to remove old moulding.
